AnnaPresso.com was nominated for the Blog of the Day Awards* earlier this week and received the distinction today. Online since January 2009, the website became popular soon after visitors started to engage with Anna in real-time over Twitter and suggest topics or ask coaching-related questions. The article on the recession started a heated debate on the personal development forums after the recent events in Ireland, and the poll on personal identity that followed is still regarded as one of the most challenging to answer in spite of its simplicity.

I asked Anna today what did she think about the recognition her work is receiving online and she said “I have been coaching clients for over 10 years and it was time to share my experience on the Internet as well, to debunk some of the trade’s myths and draw the line between the friendly conversation with the bartender in the early hours of the morning and the real process of coaching, mentoring or teaching for personal development. Being recognized for my efforts and contribution is extremely flattering – maybe I should write an article about dealing with it, after my series on fighting fear and the calls for action”.

I want to thank all our visitors, especially those who took the time to send their suggestions about the aspect of this website, which is my responsibility. Since you will not read anything else from me until we win the next award, I asked Anna and her agent for permission to address all SEO experts out there that contribute to our comments page – I could not learn this much about anti-spam WordPress plugins without you – Thank you very much!

*BOTDA is awarded by a panel of judges after nomination. Criteria include content, quality, creativity, and the personal opinion of the judges. The contest was launched in 2006 and is the brainchild of Bill Austin.

WAR KILLS. It’s a concept people tend to consider “obvious”. I would have suspected that evolution and civilization would make this concept unconceivable, and that by now any problems in the world would be solved through negotiation and mediation, not through physical force and gun power. But the horrors we are witnessing or only reading about are way beyond the “usual” definition of the word war, commonly understood as: armies of opponent forces, confront each other in the (open) field; the winner takes the prize; the end. But the way the “war” happens these days means bombing civilians in their apartments, in their schools, in their hospitals even. Ambulances get hit. Emergency workers and humanitarian shelters get bombed. Somalia, Georgia, Gaza, it happened again and again, all over the globe. That’s not war. That’s genocide. That’s mass murder.

Although at times I think I understand in each case, who is the victim and who is to blame, I am also willing to admit that we are too small to have a precise understanding, beyond any reasonable doubt, of such complex circumstances. But we are (hopefully) also big enough to understand that beyond any political, economical, territorial, ethnic or “who started it”, beyond any other reason one may think of, man slaughter is outrageous. Killing defenseless innocent civilians cannot be justified by any reason in the world. Any “reason” to blow a toddler’s limbs away is anti-humanity and makes you question human reason itself. What are the political options that particular child is having and he’s being so horribly punished for? I know firsthand how life in a place where you risk your arm, your freedom or your life for your opinions or beliefs or preferences looks like. And no matter how horrified we are witnessing or even living through such terrifying experiences, the only fact I know for sure is that, at the end of the day, such reality exists because it’s being allowed.

Get informed. Then decide if the phrase “international community” involves you as well, and how.

Someone asked me recently if I think there might be an inflation of advisors these days. Never, I said. Of real ones? Never!

I know perfectly well I shouldn’t be the one to throw the stone… not because I live in a glass house, but because I live in a nice house and I’m enjoying a great life, thanks in part to a very lucrative and efficient activity of training, coaching, mentoring and teaching that I’ve done over the last 10 years. And since the success of my clients directly reflects my own success, prosperity and well-being, I would modestly say I’m really proud of their very good results.

I know quite a few people who work in the same field and whom I respect highly. Anyone who is genuinely interested in taking part in the never ending process of human development (on any level and any regard) and who is investing time, knowledge and energy into that, has a strong partner in me and my whole-hearted support. I would never pass on a good piece of advice. Neither on a hug from a close friend. Nor on a good cup of my favorite coffee. Sometimes they might even have the same refreshing effect. But there is an enormous difference between a “sincere” talk with a well-intended guy on a bench in the park and a real process of coaching, mentoring or teaching for personal development. The difference is mainly in the quality of the process, qualifications of the “giver” and therefore the efficiency of the methods and tools put to work, and bottom line, the results/progress the client is paying for.

I recently came across the website of a so-called life coach (let’s call her Kathy), a very sad representation of a, otherwise, probably well-intended lady who is not only offering some sort of unification with the client, but also recommends among “The Secret” (which is no longer one) and others, a fascinating title: “Beating Lyme Disease Book”. I’m not kidding you. Would she be among the 15% of untreated patients who display acute neurological problems or a simple altered mental status which sometimes comes as a symptom of the disease? Don’t you find the pointing to a tick-borne disease on such a site almost ironic? That being said with all the compassion for the unfortunate real sufferers out there, of course…Undoubtely, just by breaking free of that common major threat of a disease, one’s life can improve drastically. But if you work on your time management skills in the same time and boost your self esteem while contemplating the misery of horrible skin rashes, you got yourself a deal!

Just to be sure it’s all clear: while I encourage charity and the offering of free services, (I make time for free sessions as well every month), I consider it a shame (even a danger for the uninformed public) to disguise yourself in a counselor, a coach or a mentor, just by slapping a label on your forehead. It just doesn’t hold. It makes you look like a spitted cherry stone trying to wear a grocery bag as a tight top. It’s too big of a hat (or top) the one they try to fill up. Such people use a very honorable profession as a surrogate for their unfound meaning and image of self and a very sad excuse for their own profession. Not to mention it can be downright offensive to the ones who make it brilliantly, with authentic wisdom and undeniable talent and who manage to literally leave the world a better place.

Conclusion: Keep in mind there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Or a free session of any sort. Even if you’re not writing down a check, you still pay with your most valuable resource: your time! So it only makes sense if you are still getting results. Otherwise, the whole process it’s as useful as a crocheted air-freshener cozy.

I would think twice before trusting personal issues and serious matters in the shaky hands of someone who doesn’t manage to follow the line of her own lips with a lipstick, for crying out loud! I hope she’s being coached (at least) on that one.

Do you ever have one of those days when you feel kind of clumsy, not too bright, and all in all you just don’t think much of yourself in that particular moment? Just remember that this guy was “the most powerful man on the planet”. Let us all remember also that George W.Bush got elected. Twice! Not as individuals, but as a society, maybe we deserve whatever we bring upon ourselves…Anyway, if you don’t think about the huge height of his official position at the time, the man is hilarious!!! If you do think about it though, the implications are simply….frightening.
